1. I purchased Home Inventory from the Mac App Store and it keeps asking me for a serial number every time I run it.
The Mac App Store version of Home Inventory does not require a serial number. However, the Mac App Store will not install over a version of the application that was installed outside of the Mac App Store, such as the trial version. In order to install the Mac App Store version of Home Inventory, you will need to remove Home Inventory from your Applications folder.
2. I cannot connect to Home Inventory on my Mac with the Home Inventory Photo Remote app.
If you are having trouble connecting to Home Inventory with the Photo Remote app, you need to first make sure that both your Mac and Home Inventory are on the same network and that Home Inventory is broadcasting its availability to receive an incoming connection from the Photo Remote app. You do the latter by selecting Photo Remote from the Inventory menu in Home Inventory on your Mac.
If you are still unable to connect, your Mac's built-in firewall may be preventing the Photo Remote from establishing a connection with Home Inventory. To determine if this is the problem, take the following steps:
1) Under the Apple menu on your Mac, click System Preferences.
2) In the System Preferences window, click Security (in some versions of OS X this is called Security & Privacy).
3) Click the Firewall tab to see if a firewall is turned on. If the firewall is turned off, then you do not have a problem with your Mac's built-in firewall.
4) If the firewall is turned on, click the Advanced button (you may need to click the lock in the bottom left of System Preferences window and enter your password in order to make changes to the firewall settings).
5) If Home Inventory appears in the list of applications, select its connection privilege to the right and set it to Allow Incoming Connections.
6) If Home Inventory does not appear in the list, click the + button to add it and make sure it is set to Allow Incoming Connections.
7) Click the Ok button after you have made your changes.
3. How do I create a new category?
Creating new categories is easy. Simply click the popup that says Locations at the top of the list on the left side of the window. Select Categories from the list to browse your inventory by category instead of location. Click the + button beneath the list to add a new category.
4. Is there a manual for Home inventory
Yep. Just select Home Inventory User's Guide from the Help menu in Home Inventory to bring up the manual.
5. Can I access my inventory from multiple computers?
Home Inventory wasn't designed for multiple users on multiple machines working on the same inventory. Having said that, you can use a syncing service like Dropbox and store your inventory file in the dropbox folder. This way you can have access to your inventory from any machine you have Dropbox installed on. There is one very important caveat: In order to avoid file corruption or overwriting changes made on another machie, an inventory file stored on Dropbox should never be open on more than one machine at a given time.
6. Does Home Inventory support syncing with iCloud?
Not yet. There are some problems with iCloud that need to be fixed by Apple before we can support it. We do plan on adding iCloud support once these problems have been addressed.
7. Can I add items using the Photo Remote without being connected over WiFi?
You must be connected to Home Inventory on your Mac over a WiFi connection in order to use the Home Inventory Photo Remote. We do plan on adding offline capabilities to the Photo Remote app in a future update.
8. Is there or will there ever be a Windows version of Home Inventory?
We do not currently offer a Windows version of Home Inventory and at this time, there are no plans for one.
9. Do you have any plans for Anroid versions of the Home Inventory companion apps?
Not at this time.
10. Are there any differences in features between the Mac App Store version of Home Inventory and the Binary Formations Website version?
The features for Home Inventory are the same whether you purchsaed the app from the Mac App Store, our website, or a third party. Purchasing through the Mac App Store offers you convenience in managing all your apps from one place. For instance, the Mac App Store version does not require a license key. If you switch to another computer in the future, you simply download all of your purchased apps from the Mac App Store. You don't have to go to each individual site and download the product and no need to keep up with license keys. You also have the opportunity to rate and review apps in the Mac App Store.
At this time, we have no plans to end support for purchases made outside the Mac App Store.
